Blowing through fall

We’re excited to say our Calgary glassblowing studio is up and running again after a busy summer. Our new equipment installation was a challenging success. The huge white tarp ghost in the corner has disappeared as the furnace and big robot looking boxes—the annealers—are now hard at work.

With fall in full bloom and the holiday season quickly approaching we have new glassblowing workshops for you. For instance, try Ornament Time! Come make beautiful round ornaments for your home or for friends and family. If you’ve already participated in a workshop and want to return for more, here are two new options from which to choose: Encore and Glasses Galore. Explore, Try It to see more and book.

We’re also gearing up to help companies and larger groups celebrate the holiday season with a unique, fun experience that takes you back in time and away from it all.  I recently came across an Oscar-winning documentary called Glas. Dutch filmmaker, Bert Haanstra shot the film in 1958 visiting the Royal Leerdam crystal glass factory in the Netherlands among other locations.  For 10 minutes, you’re absorbed in the world of jazz music and improvising glass craftsmen. Then suddenly you’re watching the mechanized world of bottle manufacturing with music to match.

Give it a watch and you’ll see some things haven’t changed such as the heat, tools and blowing air to bring the glass to life.  Some things, of course, are different such as the focus of our work. New pieces, new directions have emerged out of Hayden’s and our team’s imaginations. We’re enjoying some pieces in the gallery while others have already made their ways to new homes.

In this complicated world, we’re thankful for the support of our clients, friends, team members, galleries and the group of companies that help us keep the studio humming. With that in mind, we’re working hard, following the straightforward advice of vocalist Jimmy Durante: Make someone happy.  Make just one person happy. And you will be happy too.
